Creating the Seven Secrets of highly successful research students (for supervisors)

9.30 - 12.00
Location: UWS Bankstown campus

You know what your research higher degree (RHD) student should be doing, but it just doesn’t seem to be happening. Despite your best efforts to set up good habits for your student, it does not work. Why is this and what can you do to make completing a RHD easier for your students and for you?

Students attending the seven secrets workshop have consistently reported a marked improvement in their progress towards completing their RHD. Now they have asked us to please tell their supervisors the same things!

This course gives you practical strategies to deal with common problems such as:

  • supervisor/student relations
  • dealing with writer’s block
  • attitude (or lack thereof!) in relation to the RHD – it’s not a Nobel prize
  • getting your student to seek help when they are stuck
  • the student who never has enough time
  • treating the RHD like a job
  • keeping on going when the going gets tough

Suitable for new supervisors and renewal of registration on The Graduate Supervisor Register.

Note: This session is open to the following universities who have agreed to a reciprocal initiative, for selected modules in the 2012 supervision program. The use of coaching in doctoral supervision: Developing candidate autonomy
Sofie Kobayashi, University of Copenhagen

2.00 - 4.30pm
Location: CHELT Seminar Room

The use of coaching techniques in doctoral supervision is often seen as an ideal to aim for: The dream scenario is to have a PhD student who takes a lead in her research, and the supervisor supports with clarifying questions that bring the PhD student forward in the thinking and research process. Striving towards this dream situation is not without problems, though. Coaching is said to work only in a space free from power relations. So, as a supervisor, can you bracket your power while coaching? Or should we find the limitations of the use of coaching techniques in doctoral supervision?
